Cubans find "Cold Corner" to Skate on Man Made Ice

A singular skating rink of man-made ice designed by New York Duke Riley
was inaugurated on Sunday in Havana as part of the ongoing
XII Biennial of Art Festival of Cuba.
Duke Riley, American Artist:
“My motivation was in knowing that the basketball and the baseball are
extremely popular in Havana, but obviously the idea of playing hockey
on ice in Cuba is good although it sounds ridiculous.”
“The Cold Corner” project could accommodate about 200 people skating
on the sheet-shaped track with the same characteristics of ice.
Ice skating has been absent on the island for over 60 years due to
lack of updated facilities.
During the 1930s to 1950s, indoors ice sports were popular among the
Cubans and a hockey team named The Tropicals was well-known even
in the United States.

Children get a rare glimpse of ice skating as US artist creates 'ice' rink in Havana
US ARTIST CREATES 'ICE' RINK IN HAVANA
Children in Havana got a rare glimpse of "ice" skating on Sunday (24 MAY 2015),
as part of an art festival featuring artists from 40 countries.
U.S. artist Duke Riley created a rink using special materials with a surface
resembling ice, but which do not melt in Cuba's hot weather.
Set up at the Malecon, the famous Havana seaside walk, the rink was inaugurated
by a Cuban skating team and children who put on skates for the first time
in their lives.
A hockey game and a rock concert were also expected to take place on the
"ice" rink, which will stay in Havana for another three days.
Riley said that he brought this project to Havana after Cuba and the
United States decided to restore their diplomatic relations.
Mario Bengochea, Cuban professional skater:
"I love that people are skating. I wish everybody in Cuba had a chance to skate, so seeing so many people doing it here makes me emotional."
Temis Ravelo, age 7, Skater:
"My mother told me once that one day I would be skating in Havana but I did not believe her because it does not snow here, so here I am now."
